How to plan a flexible week of meals

A useful meal plan begins with the week you actually have. You do not need to fill every space or cook something new every evening.

1. Map your available time

Mark evenings when you will be away, arriving late or sharing a meal elsewhere. Give the busiest days your simplest cooking ideas. Ask everyone at the table for one preference before you start.

2. Check before you shop

Write down ingredients already in your kitchen. Choose two or three meals that share ingredients: a bag of carrots might appear in a salad and a cooked dish. Put only the missing ingredients on your shopping list.

3. Leave room for changes

Use one space for a flexible meal assembled from what is available. Avoid buying ingredients for seven elaborate dinners if you usually cook three.
