A calmer kitchen: prepare before you cook

A few minutes of preparation can make a recipe easier to follow. Start by making the instructions visible and clearing enough workspace for the task.
Read from beginning to end
Check the ingredients, equipment and sequence before turning on the heat. Look for steps that need time, such as draining an ingredient or bringing a pan of water to the boil. Decide whether the recipe fits the time available.
Gather the essentials
Put the equipment and measured ingredients where you can reach them. Keep labels nearby when you need to check ingredient information. Prepare vegetables as directed and use the food-handling instructions on packaged ingredients.
Give shared tasks clear boundaries
When cooking together, agree who is using each work area and who is responsible for each step. Choose tasks suited to each person’s experience, with adult supervision where needed.
Write one useful note
After cooking, record the pan you used, any substitutions and the step you would change next time. A concrete note is more useful than simply writing “good” or “bad”. Keep your notes with the recipe so they are easy to find.
